Subject: The Magic of Turner’s Watercolours
Lecturer: Cheda Panajotovic
Watercolour is the most difficult of all painting techniques to master. The immediacy, fluidity and transparency leaves very little room for the correction of errors.
This method of painting has expressive powers peculiar to it and J.M.W. Turner was a master of the technique. These two watercolour sketches of Venice probably only took Turner 30 minutes or so to produce. Such sketches were artist’s visual ‘notes’ for later use in the studio.
The atmosphere thus captured is timeless and can never be repeated even by the same artist from the same position on another day.
Cheda will illustrate his talk with many such images painted in England and abroad and will also include others from Turner’s Venice Sketchbook.
PS: Did you know that the ‘V&A’ Museum in London owns many of Turner’s drawings, studies and sketch books and that they are all available for private inspection / study?
