This is a brief insight to a life on the ocean waves from an Engineer Cadet to Chief Engineer. During this time the world was changing from conventional cargo ships to container ships.
Life on board ships in the 60’s and 70’s that I experienced was full of excitement, danger, romance, discipline, old fashioned attitudes and many other experiences that the modern seafarer will not come across. Going around the world at such a young age was fabulous. Towards the end of the 60’s the British Merchant Navy started to move towards container ships and I was a part of that change.
The sad part of it was the change brought about the demise of most UK shipping companies who didn’t keep up with some European and far Eastern companies who built bigger and better container ships.
