A petty thief is gunned down in an alley and a Representative’s assistant (Maria Thayer) falls in front of a subway, two seemingly unrelated deaths. But not to wisecracking, brash newspaper reporter Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe), who spies a conspiracy waiting to be uncovered. With a turbulent past connected to the Representative and the aid of ambitious young rookie writer Della Frye (Rachel McAdams), Cal begins uprooting clues that lead him to a corporate cover-up full of insiders, informants, and assassins.

Theo and Xochitl, lifelong companions from Long Beach, California, a city riddled with pollution from multiple oil refineries, are now in their twenties. After Xochitl’s mother passes away during an unexpected heatwave that she attributes to climate change, she becomes disillusioned with the sluggish pace of her college divestment campaign. Seeking more aggressive environmental action, she shares her thoughts with Theo, who is battling leukemia. Together with Theo’s girlfriend Alisha and five strangers driven by their own motives, they devise a scheme to detonate an oil pipeline in West Texas.

Rule-bound head butler Stevens’ (Sir Anthony Hopkins) world of manners and decorum in the household
he maintains is tested by the arrival of housekeeper Miss Kenton (Dame Emma Thompson), who falls in
love with him in pre-World War II Britain. The possibility of romance and his master’s cultivation of
ties with the Nazi cause challenge his carefully maintained veneer of servitude.
