University of the Third Age (U3A) Moraira – Teulada
Minutes of the 6th June 2022 General Meeting
Held at the Salon GL, Avenida Mediteraneo 32, Teulada
- Welcome
Prue Jackson opened the meeting and reminded everyone of the procedures to be followed in the event of an emergency. - Synopsis of the minutes of the meeting held on 4th April 2022
Tony Old gave a synopsis of the minutes of the most recent meeting.
As usual the full minutes of that meeting had been posted onto the website, approval was proposed by Ray Guise Smith and seconded by Peter Griffiths. - Presidents Address
Prue was delighted to report that it had been a very busy month with brilliant events held to raise monies for the Ukraine and to celebrate Her Majesty the Queens Jubilee. We had also supported the European Day staged by the Town Hall and our cake stall had made the front page of at least one of the free papers.
Well done to everyone who had staged and/or supported these events which had enabled us to reach a figure exceeding 4000 Euro for the Ukraine. The Committee had agreed that 50% of monies raised would go to the Red Cross, 25% to Father Marcus and the USPG and 25% to a local charity which she was progressing.
Special thanks to Tony Old who had laboured long and hard to bring about the “Party in the Park” for the Queens Jubilee, the biggest event ever put on by our U3A.
The next meeting is our first in the new informal format and as it is the first we will be providing free coffee. As agreed this will be at the Hill Top Sports Bar and Grill in La Sabatera on July 4th. We hope to see everyone there. - Treasurers Report
Annette Warr reported as follows:
• Due to problems accessing our bank account online by some of our signatories, including those who are responsible for preparing the accounts, we have been unable to complete the month end accounts for May in time for today’s meeting!
• However she could report that at the month end there were 35,241 Euros in the bank and cash held by herself, Prue and Tony amounted to 3999.35 Euro. The mony in the bank however does include the 10,000 Euro contingency fund.
• Every attempt is being made to resolve the issue with the bank and as soon as we can do this full accounts will be posted onto the website. - Groups and Travel
Groups
In the absence of a Group Leader Prue Jackson covered the group’s area:
It was hoped that Colin Simmonds would be here to talk more about his proposal for a new group (Philosophy of Life) but as he was not present it was not known what level of interest he had received following last month’s presentation.
Insufficient interest had been shown in the idea of a Gentle Walking Group but there were of course other walking groups that members interested in walking could join.
The idea of a Ladies that Lunch group was put forward by Annette Warr and this received enthusiastic support. This would not start until post September as restaurants would not be interested before then.
Travel
David Haxon reported that a Newsletter had now gone out looking for helpers and that although the Cartagena trip had been cancelled the trip to Seville was sold out with a waiting list now in operation!
Everything was looking positive with ideas for trips being discussed, possibly one covering Salvadore Dahli.
Prue concluded this area by stressing (once again) that organisers were badly needed for trips and that the events would not organise themselves!
If anyone is interested in organising trips they should contact her. - Social Events Report
Tony Old reported that the Party in the Park had been a great success, sold out with 262 attendees and a waiting list. This was the biggest ever U3A event.
The number of volunteers that had turned up on the day for “setting up” and then “closing down” was quite remarkable, many thanks to everyone who gave their time and efforts so freely.
Overall we had done her majesty proud!
In closing Tony asked if there was support for continuing the Christmas Dinner/Dance and this was confirmed via a show of hands. - Membership Liaison Report
Steve Higham confirmed that there was nothing to report. - Any Other Business
Peter Griffiths talked about the Javea Players and an event planned for 29th June – 3rd July and 4th – 5th July. This was BATS, a dark comedy with more information given in the handout that Peter had circulated to the meeting.
The cost was 19.50 Euro which included Tapas with wine followed by the show.
More details are on their website and Peter fully recommended it.
With no further items raised the meeting closed at 10.52 AM.
