University of the Third Age Moraira-Teulada
Committee members present: Prue Jackson, Tony Old, Steve Higham, David Haxon, Eileen Haxon, Peter Johnson, Pat Clarke.
Apologies: Paul Sankey.
1.Welcome: The President welcomed members and reminded them of the Emergency and safety precautions.
2. Minutes: A synopsis of the minutes of the General Meeting of 3rd January were read and approved unanimously. Proposed: John Hopwood, Seconded Coral Guise – Smith.
3. President’s address:
Prue welcomed all those attending today’s meeting, especially the new members. She thanked Pat Clarke for managing all the membership renewals to date which included over 800 online and 118 in person at today’s meeting.
The nominations for Officer positions on the Committee closed today at 10:00 and whilst several positions have yet to be nominated, Prue assured the members that the mandatory positions will be filled and the Moraira – Teulada U3A will continue to function as before.
One Association Digital Certificate has been successfully received and a further certificate will be applied for in the near future.
Prue went on to say that although it had been a strange year for the Association with the Covid 19 pandemic, travel restrictions and the completion of Brexit, the Association continued to flourish and hopefully this year will see a return to normality for us all.
Treasurers Report
Steve Higham gave the Treasurer’s Report stating that the accounts for last year were currently being audited by Ian Brown. Both bank accounts previously held at Sabadell bank have been consolidated and transferred to La Caixa bank. The Association finances remain in a healthy position and details of the accounts can be seen on the U3A website.
4. Groups and Travel
Prue reported that a number of events scheduled to take place in Espai La Senieta have been cancelled by the Ayuntamiento, who has scheduled a feria in the venue which clashed with these planned U3A events. These events will be rescheduled and members will be advised of the new dates accordingly.
A proposed card and bridge group is hoping to start up but more members are required to make these viable.
David Haxon reported that the IKEA trip planned for Wednesday 9th February had been well subscribed and a day trip to Valencia is planned for the 24th May. A trip to Gandia is being planned with the assistance of Mark Mentha in the near future and more volunteers are being sought to help with the Travel Group.
Social Event Report
Tony Old advised that the 2 rescheduled Christmas Dinner events at Satari’s restaurant had now been combined into one and this will take place on Monday the 14th February, there are still 4 places available for this event.
A Spring / Summer dinner dance is still in the planning stage and another Hog Roast is also being considered.
David and Eileen Haxon are holding another Quiz Night in aid of our chosen charity, Make a Smile, on the 13th April. This will be held in Casa Lili, Moraira and will include a set menu. Tables of 6 are invited.
5. Membership Liaison
Steve Higham reported that he had received a query regarding the refund of monies paid for the Christmas Dinner event, and that this has already been resolved.
6. AOB
Peter Griffiths has kindly agreed to act as Elections Officer at next month’s AGM. Peter Johnson reminded the members that the Charity concert in aid of the Teulada Alzheimer’s centre featuring “The Desperados in Tribute to The Eagles” is being held on Sunday the 20th February in Espai La Senieta and not the 15th February as published in the latest newsletter.
